Shabbos, the Crown of Creation
A king made a wedding canopy; he decorated it and beautified it. What was missing? A bride to enter and stand under it! Similarly, what was missing when the physical universe had been completed? – Shabbos (Bereishis Raba 10:9)
The Torah teaches us that G-d created the world in seven days. How can it be that He created the world in seven days, if on the seventh day He rested? The answer is that on the seventh day, He created something new. He created a cessation of creative efforts concerning material concerns.
G-d gave us an opening to the pleasures of the soul. Even the physically beautiful and tasty treats that we set aside for Shabbos are in order to connect to our spiritual core. Shabbos is a day to develop a closeness to our Creator. A day to devote to learning Torah and accessing G-d’s eternal truth. A day to let go and develop our trust in Him. A day to rejoice that we are His Chosen People.
Shabbos, the day of completion and perfection, was elevated above all the other days. It is the crown of Creation. With the Shabbos Queen was under the chuppah, who would be her mate? G-d chose the Jewish People.
