This week is Shabbat Shekalim. This is the first of the four special parshiyos: shekalim, zachor, parah and hachodesh. We read the Torah commandment for Jewish males over the age of twenty to contribute one half-shekel to the communal offerings brought in the Tabernacle. Since no longer have a Temple, we now read this parsha instead.
